Robbie Gowan Masterson

Robbie Gowan Masterson, concert pianist and teacher died on 18 August 2018 in Seguin, Texas. She was 99.
Born in Bemis, Tennessee on 27 October 1918, Robbie expressed a passion for music as a young child. Her parents enrolled her at age 9 in the Howell School of Music. She finished high school in Shreveport, LA and went on to Lambuth College in Jackson, TN graduating at age 18. At Lambuth, her piano instructor encouraged and inspired her to move to New York City to study.
After two years working as a public school music teacher in Keiser, Arkansas, she did go to New York and studied at the renowned LaForge-Berumen Studios. She found employment singing in the choir at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Manhattan, where she met John Masterson, a chemical engineer and fellow chorister. They married in 1941 and had two children.
Robbie pursued her career in New York under Columbia Artists Management, performing in Times Hall, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, the Museum of the City of New York, and Radio Station WNYC.
She taught piano for 45 years in Larchmont, New York, where she lived from 1951 to 2010. She retired at the age of 91. She was an active member of the Letschetizky Association, the Music Teachers Council of Westchester, the National Guild of Piano Teachers and the Larchmont Avenue Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed traveling, reading, swimming and spending time with her family at Yankee Lake in the Catskill Mountains of New York. In 2010 she moved to Argent Court in Seguin, Texas.
She is survived by her son John Masterson and his wife Nancy of Seguin, and her daughter Sarah Masterson Daneker and her husband David of Baltimore, seven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Her husband John Masterson, Sr. died in 1980.
Services will be in New York at a later date.
