2013 Landscaping ProjectBy Alice Salmans
Well, spring is almost here at Yankee Lake so it’s time to look at our plan for this year. This is probably the biggest project that we have yet attempted. We are applying for a Sullivan Renaissance grant for financial assistance ($1000) as well as being considered for the best project in our category. This could mean as much as $3000 in prize money, which would be major for the YLPA. This is the first time that we are applying for a prize winning category and it’s very exciting! We will also be applying for a Maintenance Grant for our Rain Garden, for which we received a $500 grant in 2010 from the Sullivan Renaissance organization. (For more on the Sullivan Renaissance program, click here.)
The project includes the installation of a 30 foot flagpole integrated in to a patio that leads off to a path to the center entrance of the clubhouse. The current view of the center entrance and planned patio area is pictured below.
The patio and pathway will be completely landscaped with trees, shrubs and flowers and feature stone benches for relaxing and socializing.
The flagpole will be the symbol of our dedication to our community and country, support of volunteerism, and coming together to be trustees of our land. We hope to have the flagpole ready for our annual meeting in May for a dedication for all our members. The project will also feature a Birdhouse element to represent our preservation commitment. We are hoping to attract Bluebirds and swallows, with John Haas, our resident bird expert, leading the way. Our Arts and Crafts Children’s group will help by painting birdhouses that we will hang around the property.
You can be a part of this project by volunteering to help in the construction or by supporting this effort with your donations. As you can see, this is a large project for us, and we will need you to help us bring this project to fruition. I’m sure you will agree that this project will be enjoyed by all for many years to come.
